BIOGRAPHY

Born in Italy and based in the US, Giovanni Moltoni has spent the last 30 years as a professional jazz composer and guitarist.

Originally from Turin, Giovanni always enjoyed music, purchasing his first guitar at age 14.  Soon he was forming a rock and roll coverband with friends from school, and playing at local venues and school events.

In 1989 Giovanni moved to the US to attend Berklee College of Music.

Upon graduating with honors from Berklee in 1991, he enrolled in the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he eventually received his MFA in Jazz Guitar.

Throughout his studies at Berklee and NEC, Giovanni continued to play jazz on both a local and international scale, and began to receive his first press reviews.  He was composing all of his own music, playing with world-renowned jazz artists, and was readying himself for his first album, “Directions,” released on the Pentaflowers label, which featured Hal Crook on Trombone, Paul Del Nero on Bass and Marcello Pelletri on Drums – quite a high level of musicianship for his first album.  It was recorded while Giovanni was still an NEC student finishing his second and last year Master program in 1995.

In 1998, Giovanni began his career at Berklee College of Music, and was hired in the Department of Ear Training – a position that he still holds to this day at the rank of Professor.

The album “Directions” was critically well received, and it was followed by his next major release in 2003 entitled, “Openground.” This album was also important, as it was his first major release on his own independent label “C# squared productions.”  It also featured entirely new music, and new players in a Trio format with Bob Tamagni on Drums and Paul DelNero on Bass – both seasoned and very well known local artists.  Well received by critics, it also showcased a new fingerstyle playing for Giovanni.

In 2008, his 3rd album was released, aptly entitled “3.”  This became his first album with his new quartet – and again, he was able to play with a stellar group of musicians – Tamagni again on Drums, Fernando Huergo on Bass, and Greg Hopkins on Trumpet.  This CD featured new and innovative work, it showcased a new guitar sound mixed with digital synthesizers, to enhance his unique playing style.

Almost by accident, Giovanni happened upon an excellent recording that was made during a CD release party at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge – this was to become his fourth album, “Live.” released in 2010.

After 2 years in December 2012 he released his fifth album, entitled “tomorrow's past”.  This album represents the next step in the evolution of his music and his quartet, and presents six new and original compositions by Giovanni, two by Greg Hopkins, and one by Fernando Huergo.

After three Quartet recordings in August 2016 Giovanni released the first Trio recording in over 10 years! "Just Another Night" was recorded live in Boston, and features Fernando Huergo on Bass and Marcello Pelliteri on Drums. This live CD presents 5 new Compositions never released before and 4 Trio arrangments of compositions previously recorded with the Quartet.

In 2018 Giovanni released, free of charge, the last Ryles Jazz Club concert (March 29th), download it and read about the club Here
